Built for years, not centuries

Conventional plastic boards hang around for hundreds of years, and the microplastics they shed are building up in our bodies. Ours are made from a bio-based material that does exactly the same job in your kitchen, then breaks down in soil to water, CO₂ and biomass.

What’s it made of?

A bio-based material called PBS. It’s technically a plastic, but a very different kind: made from plant starch left over from the food industry, with a natural mineral filler added for strength.

It took five years of trial and error, and nearly 100 compounds, to get it right. It’s food safe, loves the dishwasher and eventually disappears without a trace*.

What about microplastics?

Microplastics are building up in our bodies, and we’re only beginning to understand the harm they may do. Every chopping board sheds tiny particles into your food, even wooden ones. The difference is what happens next. Like wood, our boards break down into water, CO₂ and biomass, and so does any particle that escapes into the environment. Within 3–5 years*, nothing is left.

  • Kind to your knives

Our boards score 75 on the Shore D hardness scale, slightly softer than standard polypropylene boards at 80, so they’re gentler on a blade. They’ve been through 2,000 cutting cycles under controlled knife pressure in an independent lab, and three years of everyday use in real kitchens.

  • Dishwasher friendly

Your dishwasher is hot, wet and full of detergent, but it has none of the soil microbes our boards need to break down, so washing won’t start the process. They’re safe up to 70°C, but we recommend the top shelf, as some dishwashers have exposed heating elements that can warp them.

  • Food safe

Certified to EU food-contact regulations, and to Germany’s LFGB standard, which goes further still. It even tests that a board won’t pass any taste or smell on to your food. German thoroughness, applied to your chopping board.

  • Give it to your garden

Seriously. Each component meets TÜV Austria’s OK biodegradable SOIL standard, breaking down in soil into just water, CO₂ and biomass*.

  • Send it back to us

We’ll recycle it into brand new boards AND give you 10% off your next board. It’s free in the UK through our take-back scheme.
